§ 22. Mr. A. Hendersonasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to the statement of General Chiang Kai-shek that 1907 the Chinese Nationalist authorities are to seek release from the neutralisation of Formosa and permission for a nationalistic invasion of the Chinese mainland; and whether he will give an assurance that Her Majesty's Government will oppose any such proposals for extending the Korean war.
§ Mr. EdenI assume that the right hon. and learned Gentleman refers to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's statement of 21st October. The view of Her Majesty's Government remains that, as my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister said in the House on 26th February,
Few adventures could be less successful or fruitful than for Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek to plunge on to the mainland. It remains the policy of Her Majesty's Government to seek to prevent the extension of the Korean war.
§ Mr. Emrys HughesCan the Foreign Secretary say if there is some kind of a British representative at Formosa in touch with General Chiang Kai-shek and, if so, what exactly is the status of such a representative?
§ Mr. EdenYes, Sir, we have a consular representative, I think, but perhaps the hon. Gentleman would put down a Question and I will check it.
