HC Deb 25 July 1951 vol 491 c458
34. Mr. Dodds

asked the Lord Privy Seal what progress has been made in obtaining the necessary approval to the Festival features at Battersea being retained in 1952.

Mr. Stokes

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Abingdon (Sir R. Glyn) yesterday.

Mr. Henry Brooke

Can the right hon. Gentleman explain what he meant yesterday when he said that in his opinion to keep the Exhibition open for one more year would be stupid, but to keep it open for two or five years would be quite all right?

Mr. Stokes

Certainly. As I think I explained in the course of the debate, to keep it open beyond this year would cost a certain amount in maintenance beyond that estimated at the time it was built, and if that money is to be spent—if Parliament decides to do so—I would not think it worth while for one year, but I would think it worth while for two or five years.
