HC Deb 16 March 1950 vol 472 cc1231-2
16. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Minister of Health the number of building licences allowed to the Orpington Urban District Council for 1950.

The Minister of Health (Mr. Aneurin Bevan)

The allocation for 1950 of houses for Orpington is 125, and the council have been informed that they may, if they so desire, issue licences for the building of houses by private enterprise to the maximum of one in ten of the allocation.

Sir W. Smithers

Is the Minister aware that there are 2,300 families on the waiting list; that last year the allocation of houses was 400 and that this year it is 125? Is he trying to cause chaos in Kent, so that he can the more easily set up a Soviet State in this country?

Mr. Bevan

Orpington is having its share of the national housing programme.

Mr. Speaker

Lieut.-Commander Gurney Braithwaite.

Sir W. Smithers

On a point of order. Is the Minister not aware that we have men and materials to build 1,000 houses.

Mr. Speaker

That is not a point of order, and I have called the next Question. Lieut.-Commander Gurney Braithwaite.
