HC Deb 12 February 1948 vol 447 c551
14. Mr. Bing

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that there is general dissatisfaction with the present methods of selecting and remunerating juries; and if, in consequence, he will seek powers to make new provisions regarding the qualifications and payment of jurors.

Mr. Ede

These questions are receiving consideration, but legislation would be needed to alter the existing law, and I can hold out no prospect that it will be possible for such legislation to be introduced in the near future.

Mr. Bing

Does not my right hon. Friend consider it most unsatisfactory that, in some cases, jurors can be chosen either for their wealth, or even for the number of windows they have in their houses?

Mr. Ede

Of course, that raises the question of special jurors, which is a special case.

Mr. Hector Hughes

Is it not essential, for the proper administration of justice, that this problem should be settled immediately?
