HC Deb 06 February 1947 vol 432 c1940
16. Lieut.-Colonel Elliot

asked the Minister of Health whether steps have yet been taken to secure treatment for the case of active leprosy in Liverpool, of which details were sent to his Department in November last, in view especially of the fact that in the opinion of high medical authority this case is infective and in the public interest should have special treatment.

Mr. Bevan

This case is one of extreme difficulty as the right hon. and gallant Gentleman knows. The person concerned is under medical care at his home, but I am trying to arrange for institutional treatment. I am advised that risk to the general public meanwhile is remote.

Mr. Rhys Davies

May we be told if this case was contracted in this country or abroad?

Mr. Bevan

I would not be able to reply, but I should like to point out that there is no occasion for general apprehension about this matter. There are no more lepers in this country than there have been for many years past and the disease is not highly infective.
