HC Deb 01 April 1947 vol 435 c1850
Mr. H. D. Hughes (Wolverhampton, West)

I wish to raise a question on the OFFICIAL REPORT of yesterday's Debate. It was my impression at the time, and it was reported in the Press, that the Minister of Labour, in referring to the question of a reduction of the period of 18 months' whole time service, used these words: "I have authority to say, that, at the earliest practicable moment, it will be done." The words, "at the earliest practicable moment," are omitted from Col. 1680 of the OFFICIAL REPORT, which conveys a quite different impression. I have consulted the Editor of the OFFICIAL REPORT, who agrees that the Minister used those words, and that they were inadvertently omitted by the reporter in reconstructing a slightly involved sentence. With the consent of the Minister, and as an important issue is involved, I am now raising this matter for the purpose of record and correction.

Mr. Speaker

The hon. Member has now made perfectly clear how the Minister should have been reported. No doubt it will be correctly reported in the bound volume, and the Press will now have a note of it
