HC Deb 05 December 1945 vol 416 cc2322-3
49. Mr. Stokes

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether he has any information as to the number of votes cast for and seats obtained by each of the three political parties in each of the three occupied zones in Austria in the recent elections.

Mr. Mathers

As the answer consists mainly of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the Official Report.

Following is the answer:

There are five occupied zones, including the City of Vienna, which is occupied on a quadripartite basis. Allowing for minor differences between the boundaries of the zones and those of the provinces of Austria, the following are the approximate figures required:

British Zone: People's Party 331,000 votes and 18 seats; Socialist Party 291,000 votes and 15 scats; Communist Party 42,000 votes and 1 seat.

French Zone: People's Party 161,000 votes and 9 seats; Socialist Party 61,000 votes and 3 seats; Communist Party 5,000 votes and no seat.

Russian Zone: People's Party 516,000 votes and 27 seats; Socialist Party 370,000 votes and 20 seats; Communist Party 41,000 votes and 1 seat.

U.S. Zone: People's Party 272,000 votes and 15 seats; Socialist Party 194,000 votes and 10 seats; Communist Party 1,600 votes and no seat.

Vienna: People's Party 301,000 votes and 16 seats; Socialist Party 500,000 votes and 28 seats; Communist Party 70,000 votes and 2 seats.

Taking the area as a whole, 94 per cent. of the electorate voted.
