HC Deb 06 December 1944 vol 406 cc506-7
19. Mr. Wootton-Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the British Council has ceased to subsidise papers in overseas countries; and what aggregate loss has been sustained in so doing.

Mr. Eden

The British Council still wholly finances or partially subsidises five journals overseas. One of these appears daily, one weekly, two monthly and one quarterly. Since the British Council first started this form of its activities in 1938, it has subsidised a number of journals for various periods, at a total cost of £28,512.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this money is very well spent?

Mr. Eden

I think so.
