HC Deb 20 July 1943 vol 391 cc687-8
47. Mr. Driberg

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the unfairness of discriminating between civilian war workers and ex-Service men and women by reducing the voting age of the latter groups alone, he will consider extending the franchise to all citizens of 18 years of age or over?

The Prime Minister

No, Sir.

Mr. Driberg

Will the Prime Minister bear in mind that there is a strong feeling among young men and women of 19 and 20 that if they are old enough to hold responsible posts in factories and commissions in the Forces, they should also be considered old enough to have a voice in choosing their own representatives?

The Prime Minister

That matter has received very careful consideration, and the Government's policy has been announced.
