asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he will make a statement as to the number of civilians employed in each of the main Ministries of His Majesty's Government?

Following is the answer:

The number of whole-time non-industrial Civil servants employed in all Government Departments at 1st October, 1942, was 664,577. The number of staff employed at that date in the main employing Departments was as follows:
