HC Deb 25 March 1942 vol 378 c1986
40. Mr. Stokes

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty why dispositions were not made in accordance with the competent naval advice regarding the movement of the "Scharnhorst," "Gneisenau" and "Prince Eugen," to the effect that they would attempt to escape via the English Channel?

Mr. Alexander

The dispositions made were in accordance with the competent naval advice which had to take into account other commitments to be covered.

Mr. Stokes

Is it untrue that the competent naval staff said that the ships were going up Channel, and that they were overruled by a higher authority?

Mr. Alexander

I do not know where the hon. Member gets his information from.

Commander Sir Archibald Southby

In view of all the circumstances, would it not be desirable for the House to be told, in Secret Session, what is in this report?

Mr. Alexander

I am not able to add to what was said by the Leader of the House last Thursday.

Sir A. Southby

Will the right hon. Gentleman consult with the Leader of the House and consider the matter?
