HC Deb 22 January 1941 vol 368 cc156-7
17. Sir Adam Maitland

asked the Minister of Transport, whether the national or local authority bears the cost of repairing roads damaged by enemy action; whether it is the policy of the Government to maintain the responsibility of highway authorities for the re- pair of all roads vested in them regardless of whether the roads were classified or of strategic importance; and whether, in the circumstances prevailing, the cost of repair will be a national charge.

The Minister of Transport (Lieut.-Colonel Moore-Brabazon)

It is the policy of His Majesty's Government to maintain the responsibility of highway authorities for all roads vested in them. The incidence of cost of repair of damage due to enemy action has been considered in connection with the War Damage Bill now before the House. The Government's proposals will be indicated in an Amendment to stand in the name of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Sir A. Maitland

Does that Amendment by the Chancellor meet the objections of the local authorities in regard to the matter?

Lieut.-Colonel Moore-Brabazon

I am not familiar with what the objections are.

Sir A. Maitland

They are on the question of their being called upon to bear the cost.
