HC Deb 05 August 1941 vol 373 cc1775-6
25. Mr. Leslie

asked the Secretary of State for War whether consideration will be given to increase the present billeting allowance for soldiers, in view of the increase in the prices of foodstuffs since the last Billeting Order was issued?

Captain Margesson

The rates are reviewed at frequent intervals, and the consideration mentioned by my hon. Friend will be borne in mind.

Mr. Leslie

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that a considerable increase in the cost of living has occurred since the last review, last year, when an increase of 1d. was given for breakfast and 3d. for dinner? Does he think it possible to provide breakfast for 9d. and tea for 3d. on the menu laid down?

Captain Margesson

Those considerations are taken into account.

Mr. Bellenger

Is the case of tea being reconsidered, and shall we have some decision shortly, because 3d. for a soldier's tea is very inadequate?
