HC Deb 09 April 1941 vol 370 c1537
4. Mr. Martin

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any information to give the House on the increases in the number of German personnel in French and Spanish North Africa?

Mr. Butler

Estimates of the strength of the German armistice commissions and other German personnel in French North Africa vary considerably, and I could not quote a figure; but there are indications that the number may have increased. There are German consular officials in the Spanish Zone of Morocco, and a German Consulate has recently been re-opened in Tangier.

Mr. Martin

Has the right hon. Gentleman any reason to suppose that any of the troops now operating in Libya came from Tunis?

Mr. Butler

I cannot give that information without notice.

Mr. Cocks

Has not the number of Germans in Tangier considerably increased since the conclusion of the Hoare-Suner Pact?
