HC Deb 09 October 1940 vol 365 c353
2. Mr. Wedgwood

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Turkish Government have been consulted as to future action in Syria to prevent that country coming under German or Italian control; and whether the subject has yet been raised with the Russian and American Governments in view of their interests in Syria?

The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Butler)

His Majesty's Government are in close touch with the Turkish Government on all matters of mutual concern, including the position in Syria. The answer to the second part of the Question is in the negative.

Mr. Wedgwood

In view of the interest of the Americans in the Beirut College, will the United States Government be consulted?

Mr. Butler

I am aware of that, but I cannot go further than the answer I have given at present.
