HC Deb 28 May 1940 vol 361 cc413-4
50. Captain Plugge

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the bombing of British hospital ships, he will consider effective reprisals in some form or another against action of this kind?

Mr. Attlee

The bombing of hospital ships and the machine-gunning of ambulances in France may be taken, in conjunction with the deliberate attacks by German aircraft on refugees on the roads of Belgium and France, as typical of the methods of terrorism being pursued by the German Government. His Majesty's Government hold themselves free to take such action as they may consider appropriate, but it is not their intention to exact retribution from the wounded or from women and children.

Commander Sir Archibald Southby

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider issuing a White Paper giving an account of these authentic instances of breaches of international law?

Mr. Attlee

I will look into that.
