HC Deb 12 June 1940 vol 361 c1257
27. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour whether he can make a statement on the matters raised with his Department by the hon. Member for Stoke, dealing with the release and transfer of men serving in the armed Forces?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour (Mr. Assheton)

Since the outbreak of war, more than 30,000 men have been released from the Services for civil employment. Further releases are now being arranged. With regard to the transfer of men serving in the armed Forces, eight associations of skilled workmen have supplied valuable information regarding members now serving with the Forces. This information has been of material assistance in enabling the Services to ensure that skilled men are employed in Service trades where full use will be made of their skill. This process of transfer has already been going on for several months, and appropriate action in outstanding cases continues to be taken.
