HC Deb 20 August 1940 vol 364 c1111
31. Dr. Little

asked the Secretary for Mines whether, as a certain class of coal has long been used in Northern Ireland for household purposes with satisfactory results, he will arrange that no change is made in the class or the quality of coal shipped to Northern Ireland?

The Secretary for Mines (Mr. David Grenfell)

Under war conditions the supply of particular classes of coal for household purposes must be subordinated to other considerations, such as the prior requirements of more important consumers, the heavy demands for stocking at the present time and the economical use of transport facilities. In these circumstances I am bound to ask domestic consumers in Northern Ireland, equally with those in other parts of the United Kingdom, to be prepared to use some proportion of types and sizes of coal to which they are not accustomed.
