HC Deb 30 April 1940 vol 360 c531
33. Captain Plugge

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, in the case of American subjects wishful to enlist in our Forces, there is any imposition of a condition requiring prior change of nationality?

Mr. Stanley

No alien who enlists in the British Army is required by us to change his nationality. As was stated by my right hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in answer to a Question on 18th April last, the retention of United States citizenship by United States citizens who serve in His Majesty's Forces is a matter entirely within the competence of the United States authorities.
