HC Deb 27 September 1939 vol 351 c1347
Mr. Attlee

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether any arrangements have been made for closer contact with the Government of Eire at the present time?

The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Mr. Eden)

Yes, Sir. In view of the special problems arising out of the war situation in regard to their mutual trade, economic and political relations, the Government of the United Kingdom and the Government of Eire have agreed that the existing system of communication between them should be supplementedby the appointment of a United Kingdom representative to Eire. Sir John Maffey has been appointed to this post and will take up his duties in Dublin forthwith.
