HC Deb 18 October 1939 vol 352 c874
50. Mr. A. Edwards

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether he will arrange with the Service Departments to use existing garages which have not machines suitable for producing munitions, for the upkeep and repair of lorries and other vehicles instead of organising independent workshops?

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Mr. W. S. Morrison)

Close touch is being maintained on this matter with representative bodies of the motor industry. Existing commercial garages are utilised when necessary for the repair of service vehicles where service workshops are not available, and where the repair work needed is not beyond the capacity of the ordinary garage, and arrangements are being made for the repair of vehicles through the motor manufacturers' service depot organisation.

Mr. Edwards

On a point of Order. May I hear the reply to my question?

Mr. Morrison

I will read it again if the House wishes.

Mr. Speaker

We have a large number of questions.

Mr. Edwards

Is not a Member entitled to hear the reply to his question?

Mr. Speaker

Hon. Members should have more consideration for one another.

Mr. Edwards

If other Members do not observe your Ruling on this matter, is a Member who has put a question to be penalised?

Mr. Speaker

I am afraid that he has to be.

Mr. Davidson

The noise was because the Prime Minister made a stupid reply.
