HC Deb 16 February 1939 vol 343 cc1901-2
65. Mr. G. Hall

asked the Minister of Health the cost of administration of the Contributory Pensions Scheme as a percentage of contribution revenue for the latest year for which figures are available; and will he give similar information for approved societies, insurance committees, and the central Government Department under the National Health Insurance Acts?

Mr. Elliot

The cost of administering the Contributory Pensions Scheme in 1937 represented 4.36 per cent. of the contribution revenue. The cost of administration incurred by approved societies, insurance committees, and the Central Government Department under the National Insurance Acts for the same year represented 19.63 per cent. of the contribution revenue, but the figures are not comparable as there is necessarily a great difference between the cost of administering a flat rate pensions scheme and that of a scheme providing medical benefit and cash payments of varying amounts during sickness.
