HC Deb 16 February 1939 vol 343 cc1899-900
55. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the difficulties experienced by aged and necessitous people in obtaining adequate housing accommodation or bungalows at an economic rental, he will consider raising the necessary money required for same by loan in order that local authorities who are actively engaged in providing these low-rented houses can be assisted in financing their operations at reasonable rates of interest?

Mr. Elliot

Local authorities are, so far as I know, experiencing no difficulty in financing their building operations at reasonable rates of interest and I think that the facilities available to them for this purpose are adequate.

Mr. Day

Will the Minister agree that the prices generally charged for aged men and women for this housing accommodation—10s. a week—is too high?

Mr. Elliot

Local authorities have not any difficulty in obtaining money at reasonable rates of interest.
