HC Deb 17 March 1938 vol 333 cc595-6
76. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the names of the persons responsible for the compilation and revision of the annual Parliamentary voters' list in the various districts in the Island of Lewis; and whether he is satisfied with the methods employed and the result?

The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Elliot)

The registration officer responsible for preparation of the register of voters for the Island of Lewis is Mr. P. G. MacGregor, County Buildings, Dingwall. Registration officers are appointed by local authorities for the purpose of discharging statutory duties. No representations have been addressed to me about registration in Lewis.

Mr. MacMillan

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that a great number of people, especially squatters, are being left out of the lists, according to complaints which have been made to me; and will he look into the matter?

Mr. Elliot

I will certainly look into any cases if the hon. Member will call my attention to them.

Mr. MacMillan

The right hon. Gentleman must be aware that these cases have been so numerous recently that it is not practicable to send them individually.

Mr. Elliot

I shall be glad to consider any representations that have been made, and shall be very grateful if the hon. Member will send them to me.
