HC Deb 15 March 1938 vol 333 cc197-8
24. Mr. Mathers

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many unemployed workers from the Scottish Special Areas have secured work in the industrial estate at North Hillington; and how many of the number were from West Lothian?

Mr. Elliot

I am informed that of the 900 persons at present engaged on the work of developing the North Hillington estate 663 were recruited through the temporary labour exchange which has been established on the estate. None were recruited from West Lothian.

Mr. Mathers

In view of the obvious success of this estate, and the fact that it is apparently not touching certain of the Special Areas, is there any intention of setting up a similar estate elsewhere?

Mr. Elliot

I think the Special Commissioner is considering the establishment of other estates, but I would not like to say in what localities.
