HC Deb 07 June 1937 vol 324 cc1424-5
Mr. Attlee (by Private Notice)

asked the Prime Minister whether he has anything to add to the statement made on Thursday last by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in regard to the memorandum circulated to electricity supply organisations.

The Prime Minister

In some quarters a somewhat liberal interpretation seems to have been placed upon the words "Confidential. Not for publication." printed upon this document. In the circumstances, directions have been given that a copy of the document shall be placed in the Library. A limited number of copies is now available in the Vote Office, and further copies will be made available to hon. Members as soon as possible.

Mr. Ede

Will this document now be purchasable by members of local authorities owning electricity undertakings and other persons interested?

The Prime Minister

I understand not yet.

Sir Percy Harris

Is it still to be regarded as confidential, or can its contents be made public?

The Prime Minister

I cannot see how it can be regarded as a confidential document when it is in the Vote Office.

Mr. Ede

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider placing the document on sale so that the large number of people who are interested may get copies?

The Prime Minister

indicated assent.

Mr. Thorne

Is there anything to prevent a Member obtaining a copy in the Vote Office and sending it to his local authority?

The Prime Minister

Once it is placed in the Vote Office it is, obviously, no longer confidential.
