HC Deb 21 January 1937 vol 319 c347
59. Captain Plugge

asked the Secretary of State for War whether there has been a satisfactory number of applications for enlistment under the new scheme for obtaining engineering tradesmen as recruits for the Army?

Sir V. Warrender

The scheme did not come into operation until 31st December, and it is perhaps a little early to expect immediate results. The response so far, however, is not encouraging, and my right hon. Friend can only hope that the sympathetic attitude adopted by the employers and authorities concerned will have the desired effect.

Captain Plugge

Can my hon. Friend say from which part of the country these recruits are principally obtained?
