HC Deb 16 November 1936 vol 317 c1319
31. Mr. ARTHUR GREENWOOD

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, when the tablet to commemorate the lying-in-state of His Late Majesty King George V will be placed in Westminster Hall?

Mr. HUDSON

The tablet has been prepared, and will be placed in position immediately. I am arranging with the authorities concerned for a drawing to be exhibited in the Tea Room.

33. Captain PLUGGE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether any final decision has yet been reached as to what will be the site of the memorial statue of His late Majesty King George V; and whether there is any possibility that the Parliament Square site can be reconsidered?

Mr. HUDSON

The Executive Committee of the King George National Memorial Fund, at their meeting on 4th November, decided that a statue to His late Majesty should be erected on the site facing the Houses of Parliament and adjoining Westminster Abbey. In view of this decision, the answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.

Sir W. DAVISON

Are the Government aware that the general committee representing all parts of the country have not, so far, had any opportunity of expressing an opinion with regard to the curtailed site in Abingdon Street; and would it not be desirable that the general committee should have this site put before them before the Government come to any final decision, especially as the choice of Parliament Square would give at least 100,000 in addition to the playing fields part of the fund?

Mr. HUDSON

I think my hon. Friend had better put that question on the Paper.
