HC Deb 25 June 1936 vol 313 cc1935-6
26. Captain PLUGGE

asked the Minister of Labour the number of cases of transferred labour which have proved successful and the number which have not done so, with the reasons so far as they are known which explain these failures?

Lieut.-Colonel MUIRHEAD

During the three years 1933, 1934 and 1935, 25,540 men, 14,808 women, 7,643 boys, and 11,100 girls have been transferred from areas of heavy unemployment to employment available for them in more prosperous districts. During the period mentioned, 5,674 men with dependants were assisted to remove their households to their new areas. Precise information as to the numbers who have remained permanently in the new areas is not available, but there is no doubt that a large proportion have settled successfully.

Captain PLUGGE

Is there any foundation in the Welsh complaint that transferees from the Principality are compelled to come to London instead of to places nearer home?

Lieut.-Colonel MUIRHEAD

That is a separate question.
