HC Deb 11 March 1935 vol 299 c8
15. Sir WALDRON SMITHERS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the attention of His Majesty's Government has been drawn to the action taken by the Mexican Government in connection with the affairs of the Mexican Eagle Oil Company; and whether action will be taken to see that the interests of British shareholders are protected?

Mr. EDEN

His Majesty's Government are aware that important British interests are involved in this ease and will continue to watch it with the greatest care.

Sir W. SMITHERS

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the possibility of asking other Governments to co-operate with His Majesty's Government in making a protest to the Mexican Government to stop this kind of blackmail—[HON. MEMBERS: "Order!"]. It is quite true. Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that unless some drastic action is taken shareholders in concerns in other countries will cease to be safe?

Mr. EDEN

The company have not asked for our assistance in the matter at all. If they do, we shall of course consider it.
