HC Deb 07 March 1935 vol 298 cc2115-6
36. Mr. EVERARD

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has considered the resolution passed by the producers and distributors at the Melton Mowbray egg market regarding the future of the market; and whether he will consult with these and other interested parties before any marketing scheme is proposed?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Mr. Elliot)

The putting forward of a marketing scheme under the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1931 is in the first place a matter for producers and no such scheme has in fact yet been adopted by egg producers. If a scheme is so adopted, there has to be, by statute, if any objections are received, a public inquiry at which all persons interested have an opportunity of making objections or representations with respect to it. Thereafter the Commissioner holding the inquiry has to make a report to the Minister who, after consideration of all relevant facts, may submit the scheme to Parliament for approval with or without modifications. My hon. Friend will therefore see that full opportunity is given for consideration of the possible effects of a scheme both by the industry, the public and the responsible Minister before it is proposed to Parliament.

Mr. EVERARD

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that there is considerable apprehension among poultry keepers in this country that they may be brought into a marketing scheme without adequate protection?

Mr. ELLIOT

No, Sir. It is entirely in the hands of the egg producers themselves. Until by a substantial majority they adopt the scheme it cannot come into force.
