§ 36. Mr. BURNETTasked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that the restriction of hours of driving, under Section 19 of the Road Traffic Act, interferes seriously with the business of the aerated water trade during the hot spell in the summer months; that applications for extension of the hours have twice been refused, in spite of the fact that the day's journey is taken up only to a small extent in actual driving; and will he consider legislation to amend that Section of the Act?
§ Mr. HORE-BELISHASection 19 of the Act of 1930 begins:
with a view to protecting the public against the risks which arise in cases where the drivers of motor vehicles are suffering from excessive fatigue.…The Section prescribes 11 hours as the maximum number of hours during which a driver may drive in any one day; "driving" includes workin connection with a vehicle or the load carried thereby.
