HC Deb 11 July 1935 vol 304 cc469-70
72. Mr. JANNER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps have been taken to secure bail, pending his appeal, for Captain Kane, master of the steamer "Brampton Manor," now imprisoned in Majorca; whether he will take any further steps; and whether he can make any statement as to the prospects of Captain Kane's early release?

The MINISTER for LEAGUE of NATIONS AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

Applications were made to the Provincial Court in Palma for bail or detention in hospital instead of in prison, but were rejected. The attention of the Spanish Government was accordingly drawn to this aspect of the case by His Majesty's Ambassador, and continued efforts are being made both by the British Vice-Consul at Palma and by His Majesty's Embassy at Madrid to secure detention in hospital instead of in prison. It appears, however, that bail cannot be granted in this case. As regards the latter part of the question, the appeal is to be heard on 21st July, and in the meanwhile every possible step has been taken by His Majesty's Government to impress upon the Spanish Government the serious view they take of this case.

Mr. JANNER

In view of the very grave anxiety felt around the country about this case, would the right hon. Gentleman say whether the man will receive ample legal representation?

Mr. EDEN

That point has already been dealt with in my previous answer.
