HC Deb 09 July 1935 vol 304 cc158-9
47. Sir H. SAMUEL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Government have any information showing which countries impose taxes upon light oils used for transport, with exemption or lower rates of tax for similar oils used for industrial purposes; the nature of the discrimination in each case; the method of preventing evasion and the results, both to the Revenue and to the industries concerned; and, if not, whether he will obtain such information through His Majesty's consuls and present it to the House prior to next year's Budget?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Chamberlain)

Information of the character desired by the right hon. Gentleman is not at present available, and in view of the complicated nature of the taxation systems in many of the principal foreign countries, I am not sure that it will be possible to obtain it. I will, however, inquire what can be done.
