HC Deb 16 April 1935 vol 300 cc1659-60
46. Mr. THORNE (for Mr. McENTEE)

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the lowest price quoted by a British firm and the price quoted by a German firm to whom the order was given for the supply of plywood for panelling on the steamship "Queen Mary," now being built for the Cunard Company?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Chamberlain)

I understand, on inquiry, that the lowest price quoted by a British firm was 2s. 2½per square foot. The price quoted by the firm which obtained the order was ls.2¾. per square foot.

Mr. THORNE

Is it the case that the Fair Wages Resolution of the House of Commons was attached to the contract in question?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I should imagine so, but I could not answer that question definitely without notice.

Mr. LEONARD

Is plywood a manufactured article?
