HC Deb 16 May 1934 vol 289 cc1741-2
4. Mr. RHYS DAVIES

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the commission of inquiry into the possibility of settling Assyrian refugees in Brazil has yet reported; whether His Majesty's Government has received an appeal from the Council of the League of Nations to assist in financing the settlement of the refugees; and whether, in view of His Majesty's Government's special obligations, a favourable reply will be given to this appeal?

Mr. BALDWIN

The Commission of Inquiry has now presented its final report which is being considered by the Assyrian Committee of the Council of the League. As regards the second and third parts of the question, the Council of the League at its Seventy-Eighth Session in January, 1934, adopted a resolution in which appeal was made to the generosity of Governments and private organisations to consider participating in the financing of the scheme, having regard more particularly to its humanitarian aspect. But until a concrete scheme has been worked out and agreed upon for re-settling the Assyrians. I am unable to anticipate the nature of the reply of His Majesty's Government to this appeal.

Mr. DAVIES

May we take it for granted that when the request is put into proper form the Government will give kindly consideration to it?

Mr. BALDWIN

I think we have always had an attitude of general sympathy towards the scheme.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Has any consideration been given to the alternative settlement of the Assyrians in Trans-Jordan around Jerash.
