HC Deb 13 November 1933 vol 281 cc561-2
35. Sir J. WARDLAW-MILNE

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether the Government will set up a commission to examine the position of those who have to pay tithe under the 1925 Act?

Mr. ELLIOT

I have recently discussed the position with deputations representative of tithe-payers and tithe-owners, and the views put forward by the interests concerned are receiving my full consideration. I am not at present in a position, however, to make a further statement on the subject.

Sir J. WARDLAW-MILNE

Would my right hon. Friend consider whether, in view of the widespread dissatisfaction, it is not desirable to have an inquiry to settle finally whether the tithe-payer has a grievance or not?

Mr. ELLIOT

It is, in the first place, a question for tithe-payers and tithe-owners to settle between themselves.
