HC Deb 22 May 1933 vol 278 cc751-2
26. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Agriculture the reason for the fact that, despite the restriction scheme, the imports of beef in April, 1933, were 12,399 cwts. higher than in April, 1932?

Major ELLIOT

The increase in the imports of beef in April, 1933, compared with April, 1932, is attributable, for the greater part, to increased imports of frozen beef from Australia and New Zealand; an increase was also recorded in frozen beef from South America. On the other hand, imports of chilled beef showed a very substantial decline. I would again remind my hon. Friend that no special significance attaches to monthly figures, Since the arrangements as regards foreign countries relate to quarterly periods, and the undertakings of Australia and New Zealand relate to the whole year 1933.

Lieut.-Colonel ACLAND-TROYTE

May I ask my right hon. and gallant Friend whether the prices of cattle have not also declined?

Major ELLIOTT

I must have notice of that.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Is this question not a reflection on the Ottawa Conference?
