HC Deb 17 May 1933 vol 278 cc354-5
35. Mr. BOOTHBY

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the present situation in Europe, His Majesty's Government will take steps to increase the strength of the Air Force in order to bring us up to a one-Power standard?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Ramsay MacDonald)

This question cannot be considered apart from the results of the Disarmament Conference, and I would refer my hon. Friend, therefore, to the table of strengths of aeroplanes put forward in the Draft Disarmament Convention which was submitted by the United Kingdom Delegation to the Disarmament Conference on 16th March, 1933.

Mr. BOOTH BY

Does not the Prime Minister think that, without prejudice to any future agreements which may be arrived at, our influence on the Continent will be greatly increased if it is backed by adequate forces?

The PRIME MINISTER

At the moment our forces are adequate, and, according to the table, there is a level of strength which is equal to our own.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is the type of question we shall all be asking shortly, unless we can prevent Germany re-arming?

The PRIME MINISTER

The Government have never made any secret of the fact that a great deal depends on the attitude and influence of Germany as to whether this table can or cannot be carried out.
