HC Deb 11 May 1933 vol 277 c1697
42. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether there has been any increase in the staff of the Customs Department since the introduction of import duties; and, if so, the number and estimated cost to date?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

The staff of the Customs and Excise Department has been increased since October, 1931, by 1,360, at an approximate annual cost of £270,000.

Mr. CHARLES BROWN

Will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind the statement of his right hon. Friend yesterday that tariffs are now useless; and will he at once take steps to annul the Import Duties Orders and save this expense?
