HC Deb 20 March 1933 vol 276 cc38-9
77. Mr. MITCHESON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much Canadian wheat imported into this country since 15th November, 1932, has been required to pay duty on the ground that it was not consigned from Canada?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

The imports of goods into this country are recorded by country of consignment not by country of origin, and we have no figures of the quantities of Canadian wheat that may have been consigned from countries other than Canada. In consequence no information is available as to the quantity of Canadian wheat that may have been refused admission to preference on the ground that it was not consigned to this country from Canada.

Mr. HERBERT WILLIAMS

Have any steps been taken to record this information, so that we can discover whether or not the present system is working satisfactorily?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

No, I am advised that the difficulties are too great.
