HC Deb 02 March 1933 vol 275 c555
94. Mr. MABANE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the Swiss Government have placed an embargo on the importation of woollen and worsted tissues of a weight exceeding 300 grammes a square metre; whether there is reason to believe this action is preliminary to the establishment of a quota for these goods; whether he can give any further information on the subject; and what action he proposes to conserve the interests of those engaged in this country in the manufacture of these goods?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Under a Swiss Decree and Order of 23rd February, the importation from any country of the tissues referred to is made subject to special authorisation, and the competent department has power under the decree to fix quotas for each country. The position will be carefully watched and appropriate steps will be taken should any question of discrimination against this country arise.

Sir P. HARRIS

Is not this partly the result of the tariff policy of the Government, which has inevitably led to retaliation?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

No, Sir.
