HC Deb 20 December 1933 vol 284 c1307
54. Mr. C. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he is yet in a position to state the names of the members of the Sea Fish Commission?

Mr. ELLIOT

As I have already informed the House, the Ministers responsible for the appointment of this Commission have been fortunate in securing the services of Sir Andrew Duncan as chairman. The other members are:

Lord Wolmer;

Francis Beattie, Esq., of Wm. Beattie, Ltd., Glasgow;

Edwin Fisher, Esq., of Barclay's Bank Ltd.; and

Lawrence Neal, Esq., of Daniel Neal and Sons, Ltd.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Will the right hon. Gentleman state why the consumers have no representative on this Commission?

Mr. ELLIOT

I am unaware that any one of these gentlemen has taken a vow against eating fish.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

May I ask whether in this very vital question affecting 46,000,000 consumers the right hon. Gentleman does not think that they ought to have a direct representative?

Mr. ELLIOT

Surely my hon. Friend is aware that if a direct representative is given to the consumers, a direct representative must be given to the producers? I have carefully avoided any direct representation of any interest, either consumer or producer.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Why is there a representative of the banks?
