HC Deb 13 April 1933 vol 276 c2722
16. Mr. BERNAYS

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he has received any communication from the Import Advisory Committee with regard to the 20 per cent. duty on foreign ships imported into this country for the purpose of being broken up?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

Yes, Sir. The Advisory Committee have recommended that the duty in question be withdrawn; and the Treasury, after consultation with the appropriate Department, have decided to adopt this recommendation. An Order giving effect to this decision will be made as soon as possible.

Mr. BERNAYS

While thanking my hon. Friend for his very welcome declaration, may I ask him if he has any information that the Advisory Committee are now turning their attention to the taxation of other raw materials, which is causing widespread unemployment?
