HC Deb 05 May 1932 vol 265 cc1260-1
14. Mr. McGOVERN

asked the Home Secretary the reason for prohibiting the holding of mass meetings by the Police Force; and why he refused to allow them the liberty of discussing their grievances by having their own speakers to address them?

Mr. STANLEY

I would refer the hon. Member to the full statement made by my right hon. Friend in the course of the discussion on the Police Vote on Monday last.

Mr. McGOVERN

I understood the objection raised was to outside speakers, and I want to know whether the hon. Gentleman is prepared to allow speakers from the Police Federation, who are policemen themselves, to address the dissenting members of the Police Force? Why should there not be the same liberty as was given to the dissenting Members of the Cabinet?

Mr. STANLEY

My right hon. Friend devoted a good deal of time to this subject in his speech on Monday, and I can add nothing to what he has said.
