HC Deb 10 February 1932 vol 261 c828
7. Mr. BUCHANAN

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he can state the total number of troops now engaged in connection with the trouble at Shanghai, and the number of naval men engaged?

Mr. EDEN

On the 9th February the British troops on land were four battalions and ancillary troops. His Majesty's ships at Shanghai were four cruisers, one sloop and one gunboat, with a total complement of about 3,000.

Mr. BUCHANAN

With regard to the Army section, is it the case that almost all the Army section is composed of Scottish troops?

Mr. EDEN

I think there is at least one Scottish battalion.
