HC Deb 17 June 1920 vol 130 cc1437-8
34. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware of the persecution of Jews and Communists at present going on in Hungary and, in view of the evidence produced, will he call upon His Majesty's representative in Buda-Pesth for a Report on the subject?

The PRIME MINISTER

My attention has been directed to statements on the subject of these alleged persecutions. His Majesty's representative in Buda-Pesth has already reported fully on the conditions referred to and will be asked to examine further the new Reports received.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is it not a fact that His Majesty's representative at Buda-Pesth has recently wired to the effect that the conditions are getting worse and that there is a state of terror, and that representations have been made to the Hungarian Government?

The PRIME MINISTER

Yes, he has wired that the conditions are certainly not improving and if anything are getting worse.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is the Government making representations to the Hungarian Government?

The PRIME MINISTER

Certainly.

Lieut.-Colonel S. HOARE

Following the precedent of the appointment of Sir Stuart Samuel's Commission to Poland, will the right hon. Gentleman send a special Commission out to inquire into this question?

The PRIME MINISTER

I should be very glad to consider that suggestion. Our representative in Hungary is very disturbed about the action of the Government there and has made representations to us on the subject. We are giving him such support as we can.
