HC Deb 14 February 1911 vol 21 cc865-6
Mr. HINDS

asked the number of pensions paid, and the amount thereof, to January 1911, to persons who, on 31st December, 1910, were in receipt of parish relief, indoor or outdoor, in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, respectively?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I regret that the information desired cannot be given. The number of persons, previously disqualified by the receipt of poor relief, who were awarded pensions payable as from the first Friday in the New Year (January 6th) was as follows:—

England and Wales 135,385
Scotland 10,474
Ireland 17,306
Total 163,165
But these figures include all persons who had received poor relief at any time since 1st January, 1908; and I have no means of distinguishing those who were actually in receipt of poor relief on 31st December, 1910. Even if the number of the latter class were known, it would be impossible to state how many of them actually drew pensions in January, or how much was paid to them.
