HC Deb 11 April 1911 vol 24 cc211-2
Mr. CROFT

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will state when the Canadian-Japanese commercial treaty of 1907 expires; whether the treaty will be renewed on the same terms; or whether it is suggested to widen or extend it with a view to embracing other commodities, including Canadian food stuffs?

Sir E. GREY

Notice was given on 17th January last by the Japanese Ambassador of the intention of his Government to terminate the Convention between Great Britain and Japan of 31st January, 1906, respecting commercial relations between Canada and Japan. In accordance with the terms of Article 2 of that instrument, the Convention will cease to have effect from 17th July next. With regard to the second part of the question, I understand that the matter is at present engaging the attention of the Dominion Government, who are entitled to adhere, should they so desire, to the treaty signed with Japan on the 3rd instant by Article 26. I am unaware whether the Canadian Government have as yet come to any definite decision in the matter.
