I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has official information of the arrest in Natal on the 13th instant of Mr. Josiah Gumede, who was one of the deputation of Basuto chiefs who recently laid their petition before the Colonial Office, and returned to South Africa last month at the † See (4) Debates, clxxiv., 577. repeated request of Lord Elgin; and if so, what is the charge against Mr. Gumede; and if he has no information will he inquire by cable.
